Osaka & Kansai Parks

Amusement Parks in Osaka and Kansai

Universal Studios Japan gets the headlines, and for Nintendo and Harry Potter fans it deserves them. But Osaka has gentler, cheaper days out too: Hirakata Park, a family favorite for more than a century; the Osaka Wheel on the old Expo site; an aquarium and a LEGO center on the bay; Kyoto's rebuilt samurai film town; and safari parks a train ride away.

Everything here is planned from Shin-Osaka and Higashimikuni on the Midosuji Line. Which park is "best" matters less than who you're traveling with, what the weather is doing and how far you want to ride. Prices and ticket rules at the big parks change often, so check the official site before you give a day to any of them.

The short version

For the big day: Universal Studios Japan. Book your date early, because prices can rise as it sells; be at the gate before opening; and grab a Super Nintendo World timed-entry slot in the app. For less money: Hirakata Park. For an easy half-day: EXPOCITY and the Osaka Wheel, straight up the Midosuji Line. For rain: Kaiyukan and LEGOLAND Discovery Center at Tempozan.

Resist stacking parks. USJ in the morning and Hirakata Park in the evening looks efficient on paper and rarely works in practice. With small children, follow any big park day with a slow one.

Universal Studios Japan: tickets, Nintendo World and getting there

Universal City, Osaka Bay · Allow a full day

What's inside A full day

USJ packs film and game worlds onto one site. Super Nintendo World has the Mario Kart and Yoshi rides and, since December 2024, the Donkey Kong Country area. Add The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a run of big roller coasters and seasonal events such as the autumn Halloween nights. Expect crowds on almost every weekend and school holiday.

USJ tickets and prices Book early

From September 2026, an adult 1-Day Studio Pass starts at 8,400 yen. Every date has its own price, and under USJ's new system that price can go up after tickets are released as the day fills. Once your dates are fixed, buy on the official site or app rather than waiting. Express Passes, sold separately, shorten the queues for selected rides and often sell out on busy days.

Getting into Super Nintendo World Use the app

On busy days, entry to Super Nintendo World, Donkey Kong Country included, needs a free timed entry ticket. As soon as you're through the gate, scan your park ticket in the official USJ app and request a slot. When the slots run out, the app may open a lottery instead. Some Express Passes and travel packages come with guaranteed entry. Leave the area and you usually can't go back in the same day.

How to get to USJ Umeda, then JR

From Higashimikuni, ride the Midosuji Line to Umeda and walk across to JR Osaka Station. Take the JR Loop Line to Nishikujo and change to the Yumesaki Line for Universal City, or catch one of the trains that run straight through from Osaka Station. Universal City Station opens onto CityWalk, the shopping street that leads to the gate.

Be there before opening. The first hour sets up the whole day: it's when the Nintendo slots, the Express Passes and the short queues go. Bring a charged phone and a power bank, because tickets, wait times and entry all run through the app.

Cheaper amusement parks in Osaka

Local favorites, smaller bills

Hirakata Park A full family day

Locals call it Hirapa, and Kansai families have been coming for more than a century. It's an old-school amusement park: roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, rides for small children, a pool in summer, an ice rink in winter and illuminations once the evenings turn cold. Entry is 2,000 yen for adults, or 5,400 yen with the unlimited-ride Free Pass, and Keihan and Osaka Metro sell combined train-and-entry tickets.

Midosuji Line to Yodoyabashi, then the Keihan Main Line to Hirakata-koen Station. The park closes on some weekdays, so check the calendar first.

EXPOCITY and Expo '70 Commemorative Park Close to base

The site of the 1970 World Expo in Suita now has two halves. EXPOCITY is a shopping complex with the Osaka Wheel, billed as Japan's tallest Ferris wheel, and NIFREL, an indoor "living museum" of animals and aquatic life. Across the road, Expo '70 Commemorative Park has lawns, gardens and Taro Okamoto's giant Tower of the Sun. It's an easy half-day with children, and the obvious plan B when USJ is sold out.

Midosuji Line north to Senri-Chuo (many trains run through onto the Kita-Osaka Kyuko line), then two stops on the Osaka Monorail to Bampaku-kinen-koen.

HEP FIVE Ferris wheel A quick ride in Umeda

The red Ferris wheel on the roof of HEP FIVE, a shopping building in Umeda two stops south of Shin-Osaka, won't fill a day. It's a cheap ride over the city that slots neatly between shopping and dinner.

Osaka on a rainy day: Kaiyukan and LEGOLAND at Tempozan

Indoors, and good for young children

Kaiyukan, LEGOLAND Discovery Center and the Tempozan wheel Half a day, mostly indoors

Kaiyukan is one of the world's largest aquariums, built around a vast central tank that stands for the Pacific Ocean. Next door in the Tempozan Marketplace mall, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Osaka is an indoor play center for 3- to 10-year-olds, with rides, a 4D cinema, building zones and a LEGO model of Osaka. Tickets are sold by date and cost 2,200–3,300 yen depending on the day; adults generally need to come with a child. If the weather clears, the Tempozan Ferris wheel outside looks out over the bay.

Midosuji Line to Hommachi, then the Chuo Line to Osakako; the station is about five minutes' walk away. When it's running, a sightseeing ferry crosses the bay to the Universal City side.

Theme parks for a day trip or overnight from Osaka

Kyoto · Hyogo · Wakayama

Uzumasa Kyoto Village Reopened March 2026

For decades this was Toei Kyoto Studio Park, the open-air side of a working studio where samurai dramas are filmed. It reopened on 28 March 2026 after a major renewal as Uzumasa Kyoto Village: an immersive Edo-period Kyoto aimed as much at adults as at children, with live shows, ninja attractions and around ten new restaurants. Later evening opening is planned. Adult admission was 2,800 yen at reopening. JR Uzumasa Station, on the Sagano Line from Kyoto, is a short walk away.

Himeji Central Park Safari plus rides

Outside Himeji, this is a safari park and an amusement park in one: a drive-through safari (in your own car or on a safari bus), a walking safari, roller coasters and a summer pool. Buses run from JR Himeji Station. It fills a day on its own, so if you want Himeji Castle too, give the castle a separate morning.

Adventure World Shirahama, Wakayama

Adventure World was best known for its giant pandas until 28 June 2025, when the last four returned to China. The park carries on with a large safari explored by train and cart, marine shows with dolphins and whales, a big penguin colony and a small amusement area. Shirahama is a long limited-express ride from Shin-Osaka, so pair the park with the town's hot springs and stay the night.

Three park days from Shin-Osaka

The USJ day

  1. Book a date-specific ticket early, install the USJ app and decide whether an Express Pass is worth it for your group.
  2. Take an early Midosuji Line train to Umeda, then JR to Universal City.
  3. Be at the gate before opening, and request a Super Nintendo World slot the moment you're inside.
  4. Sit down properly for a break mid-afternoon. Stay for the evening if everyone still has energy.
  5. JR back to Osaka Station and the Midosuji Line home. Keep tomorrow slow.

Good for: first-timers, teenagers and Nintendo or Harry Potter fans.

The easy family day near base

  1. A slow breakfast, then the Midosuji Line north to Senri-Chuo and the monorail to Bampaku-kinen-koen.
  2. NIFREL in the late morning.
  3. Lunch at EXPOCITY, then a picnic or a walk to the Tower of the Sun in Expo '70 Park.
  4. The Osaka Wheel in the late afternoon, as the light softens.
  5. Monorail and Midosuji Line home in time for dinner.

Good for: families with young children, arrival days and anyone who missed out on USJ tickets.

The rainy day

  1. If you have children aged 3–10, book a LEGOLAND Discovery Center time slot the night before.
  2. Midosuji Line to Hommachi, then the Chuo Line to Osakako.
  3. Kaiyukan in the morning, ahead of the tour groups.
  4. Lunch at Tempozan Marketplace, then LEGOLAND Discovery Center.
  5. The Ferris wheel if the rain stops; if not, an early night.

Good for: families with young children and bad-weather days.

Tickets, weather and other things to know

Getting around: this page is planned from Higashimikuni on the Midosuji Line. EXPOCITY is north via Senri-Chuo and the Osaka Monorail; USJ is via Umeda and JR; Hirakata Park is via Yodoyabashi and the Keihan line; Tempozan is via Hommachi and the Chuo Line. Kyoto, Himeji and Shirahama are day trips or longer from Shin-Osaka. If you use a bus, train or ferry, always double-check the current timetable, platform, through-running and operation status before departure, and again on the morning you travel.

Staying in Higashimikuni for Osaka's parks

Stark House Osaka Higashimikuni is a three-minute walk from Higashimikuni Station, one stop north of Shin-Osaka on the Midosuji Line. That single line runs north toward EXPOCITY and south to Umeda for USJ, Yodoyabashi for Hirakata Park and Hommachi for Tempozan, while Shin-Osaka puts Kyoto, Himeji and Shirahama within reach. Each private studio is about 30 m², with a kitchen, a washing machine and a bathtub, which you'll appreciate after a long park day with children.

What you get is a quiet base with one train line to most of Osaka's parks. If your trip is several USJ days in a row, though, a hotel near Universal City will be simpler.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Universal Studios Japan ticket in 2026?

From September 2026, an adult 1-Day Studio Pass starts at 8,400 yen. Each date has its own price, and under USJ's new system that price can go up after tickets are released as the day fills. Buy on the official site or app as soon as your dates are fixed. Express Passes, which shorten queues, are sold separately.

Do I need a separate ticket for Super Nintendo World?

On busy days, yes: you need a free timed entry ticket, which you request in the official USJ app after entering the park. When the slots run out, a lottery may open. Some Express Passes and travel packages include guaranteed entry. Donkey Kong Country, opened in December 2024, is part of Super Nintendo World and uses the same entry.

How do I get to Universal Studios Japan from Shin-Osaka?

Take a JR train to Osaka Station, then the JR Loop Line to Nishikujo and the Yumesaki Line to Universal City; some trains run through from Osaka Station without a change. From Higashimikuni, take the Midosuji Line to Umeda and walk to JR Osaka Station. Always double-check the current timetable and operation status before departure.

What is a cheaper alternative to USJ in Osaka?

Hirakata Park, a local favorite for more than a century, costs 2,000 yen for adult entry or 5,400 yen with an unlimited-ride Free Pass. For something shorter, the Osaka Wheel at EXPOCITY, the Tempozan Ferris wheel and the HEP FIVE rooftop wheel in Umeda charge by the ride. All cost far less than a day at USJ.

What can families do in Osaka on a rainy day?

Go to Tempozan on Osaka Bay, where the Kaiyukan aquarium and LEGOLAND Discovery Center are both indoors. LEGOLAND Discovery Center is designed for children aged 3 to 10 and sells date-specific tickets in advance. NIFREL at EXPOCITY is another indoor option.

Does Adventure World still have pandas?

No. Adventure World's four giant pandas returned to China on 28 June 2025. The park in Shirahama, Wakayama, still has a large safari, marine shows, penguins and a small amusement area, but it is a long trip from Osaka and works best as an overnight stay.

Is Toei Kyoto Studio Park (Uzumasa Eigamura) still open?

Yes, under a new name. After a major renewal it reopened on 28 March 2026 as Uzumasa Kyoto Village, recreating Edo-period Kyoto with immersive shows, ninja attractions and new restaurants, and it is now aimed more at adults than before. Adult admission was 2,800 yen at reopening; check the official site for current prices.

Which parks are easy to reach from Higashimikuni?

EXPOCITY is north on the Midosuji Line to Senri-Chuo, then two stops on the Osaka Monorail. USJ is via Umeda and JR. Hirakata Park is on the Keihan line from Yodoyabashi, and Tempozan is on the Chuo Line from Hommachi. Kyoto, Himeji and Shirahama are day trips or longer from Shin-Osaka. Always double-check the current timetable and operation status before departure.

One big park, then a slow day

Pick the park that suits your group and the forecast, book the date, and sort out the journey before you start planning rides. The best park day is the one that leaves you enough energy for the next.
