Osaka & Kansai Museums

The Best Museums in Osaka and Kansai

Osaka's museums come in clusters. Modern art sits on the river island of Nakanoshima; the city's 1,400-year story is told beside Osaka Castle; the cultures of the world fill a vast museum on the old Expo site; and one Hankyu line takes you from the birthplace of instant ramen to the hometown of Astro Boy's creator. Go a little further and Kansai adds Kyoto's railway and manga museums, a whisky distillery on the way there, and Nara's imperial treasures, on show for only about two weeks each autumn.

Everything here is planned from Shin-Osaka and Higashimikuni on the Midosuji Line. Nobody needs to see every museum in Kansai. A better plan is one major museum and one smaller one in the same area. Several Osaka museums are closed for renovation in late 2026 and closing days vary a lot, so check the official site before you build a day around any of them.

The short version

For an art day: Nakanoshima, where the Nakanoshima Museum of Art and the National Museum of Art stand side by side. For something only Osaka has: Minpaku in Expo '70 Park, straight up the Midosuji Line. With children: the Cup Noodles Museum in Ikeda or the Kyoto Railway Museum. This autumn: the Shosoin Exhibition in Nara, 24 October to 9 November 2026.

Nakanoshima in the morning, Ikeda at lunch and Kyoto in the afternoon isn't a museum day; it's a train timetable. Two museums in one area is plenty.

Nakanoshima: Osaka's art museum island

A walk from Yodoyabashi

Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka Opened 2022

Opened in February 2022 inside a striking black box of a building, this museum holds more than 6,000 works from the mid-19th century to the present: Japanese oil painting and nihonga, European modern art, contemporary art, photography and design. Its big special exhibitions are among the most visited in Kansai, so book timed tickets online for the popular ones.

National Museum of Art, Osaka Next door, underground

Next door, a sculptural steel entrance leads down to galleries built almost entirely underground, devoted to contemporary art from Japan and abroad. With the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, it makes a full art day on one short walk. For families, the Osaka Science Museum and its planetarium are on the same block.

The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, a short walk east and home to one of the world's finest collections of Chinese and Korean ceramics, began a long-term closure on 3 August 2026.

Getting there: Midosuji Line to Yodoyabashi, then walk west along the river, or walk from Higobashi on the Yotsubashi Line. Nakanoshima is also an easy walk from Umeda.

Osaka Castle and the Osaka Museum of History

Tanimachi 4-chome

Osaka Museum of History With a castle view

If you want to understand Osaka's 1,400-year story, start here. It runs from the ancient Naniwa Palace, whose remains lie right beside the museum, through the merchant city of the Edo period to modern Osaka. You begin on the top floor and walk down through time, with a view over Osaka Castle park thrown in. The castle itself is a short walk away.

Osaka Castle main tower A museum inside

The castle tower is a modern reconstruction, and inside is a museum of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the castle's history, with an observation deck at the top. Go early; the queues build from late morning.

Osaka Museum of Housing and Living Closed until 5 January 2027

Usually one of Osaka's most enjoyable museums: a full-size recreation of an Edo-period Osaka street, with shops and houses you can walk into, plus dioramas of the modern city. It's closed for renovation from 1 September 2026 to 5 January 2027. Once it reopens, you'll find it next to Tenjimbashisuji 6-chome Station, where it pairs well with the long Tenjinbashisuji shopping arcade. Adult entry has been 600 yen, and it usually closes on Tuesdays.

North Osaka: Minpaku, Cup Noodles and Tezuka

Close to base

National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku) Half a day or more

Inside Expo '70 Commemorative Park, Minpaku is one of the largest ethnology museums in the world: masks, boats, clothing, instruments and everyday objects from every continent, arranged by region, with a large section on the peoples of Japan, including the Ainu. It's enormous, so pick two or three regions rather than trying to see it all. Open 10:00–17:00, closed on Wednesdays.

Midosuji Line north to Senri-Chuo (many trains run through onto the Kita-Osaka Kyuko line), then the Osaka Monorail to Bampaku-kinen-koen. EXPOCITY and the Tower of the Sun are next door; see our amusement park guide.

Cup Noodles Museum Osaka Ikeda Free entry

Momofuku Ando invented instant ramen here in Ikeda in 1958, and this museum tells how. Entry is free. At the My CUPNOODLES Factory you design your own cup and pick its soup and toppings for 500 yen. At the Chicken Ramen Factory you knead and shape instant noodles by hand; it costs 1,200 yen for visitors of junior-high age and up, and you need a reservation. Open 9:30–16:30, closed on Tuesdays. It's a walk from Ikeda Station on the Hankyu Takarazuka Line from Umeda.

Tezuka Osamu Manga Museum, Takarazuka Check closures

The "god of manga", creator of Astro Boy, grew up in Takarazuka, and this museum celebrates his work with original drawings, an animation workshop and a reading corner. Adult entry is 700 yen (900 yen from March 2027), and it's usually closed on Mondays. It has long closure periods in 2026, so check the calendar first. Takarazuka is at the end of the same Hankyu line as Ikeda, so the two make a natural day together.

Yamazaki Distillery: where Japanese whisky began

Suntory Yamazaki Distillery Between Osaka and Kyoto

In the valley where Japanese whisky was born, Suntory's distillery runs the Yamazaki Whisky Museum. It's free to enter without a reservation, with displays on the history of Japanese whisky and a shop. Guided tours of the distillery itself are paid and allocated by advance lottery, and tastings are for adults aged 20 and over. It's about ten minutes' walk from JR Yamazaki or Hankyu Oyamazaki Station, so it fits neatly on the way to Kyoto.

Kyoto museums: trains, manga and national treasures

Day trips from Shin-Osaka

Kyoto Railway Museum A family favorite

One of Japan's biggest railway museums, with Shinkansen, steam locomotives and a working roundhouse at Umekoji. A short steam train ride leaves from the museum for a small extra fee (300 yen for adults). Adult entry is 1,500 yen. It's closed on Wednesdays, except on public holidays and during school holidays, and sits next to Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station on the JR Sagano Line, one stop from Kyoto.

Kyoto International Manga Museum In an old school

This museum lives in a former elementary school and holds a huge manga collection, much of it on open shelves you can read from, out in the old schoolyard on a fine day if you like. Adult entry is 1,200 yen, and it's closed on Wednesdays. It's next to Karasuma-Oike Station.

Kyoto National Museum Near Sanjusangendo

Kyoto's national collection of Japanese and Asian art, with big special exhibitions in the modern Heisei Chishinkan wing. It's across the road from Sanjusangendo, the temple of 1,001 Kannon statues, so the two make a calm morning in eastern Kyoto.

Nara National Museum and the Shosoin Exhibition 2026

Nara National Museum 24 Oct – 9 Nov 2026

In Nara Park, among the deer, the Nara National Museum holds one of Japan's finest collections of Buddhist sculpture. Each autumn it hosts the Shosoin Exhibition , a small selection of the eighth-century imperial treasures kept in the Shosoin storehouse at Todaiji, which you can't see at any other time. The 78th exhibition runs from 24 October to 9 November 2026. Expect long queues, and check the museum's ticket arrangements well ahead.

Also in Kansai: the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, designed by Tadao Ando, sits on the waterfront. And if you're a ramen fan, pair the Cup Noodles Museum with the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum in our Yokohama guide.

Tickets, closing days and other things to know

Getting around: this page is planned from Higashimikuni on the Midosuji Line. Nakanoshima is a walk from Yodoyabashi; Minpaku is north via Senri-Chuo and the Osaka Monorail; Ikeda and Takarazuka are on the Hankyu Takarazuka Line from Umeda. Kyoto, Yamazaki and Nara are day trips from Shin-Osaka. If you use a bus, train or ferry, always double-check the current timetable, platform, through-running and operation status before departure, and again on the morning you travel.

Staying in Higashimikuni for Osaka's museums

Stark House Osaka Higashimikuni is a three-minute walk from Higashimikuni Station, one stop north of Shin-Osaka on the Midosuji Line. The same line reaches Yodoyabashi for Nakanoshima and Umeda for the Hankyu line, and runs north toward Minpaku, while Shin-Osaka puts Kyoto and Nara within easy day-trip reach. Each private studio is about 30 m², with a kitchen, a washing machine and a bathtub.

What you get is a quiet base with one train line to most of Osaka's museum districts. If you plan to spend nearly every day in Kyoto's museums and temples, though, staying in Kyoto will be simpler.
